Not to be overlooked is Alex North's lavishly exotic musical score. While it contains the necessary epic style - plenty of pomp and grandiose fanfares - the score is also multi-layered with delicately orchestrated themes.

There's a slinky, snake-like quality to the music that fits the film like an Egyptian headdress. The image is razor sharp so that the most minute details in fabrics and backgrounds register clearly.

Colors are rock steady and vibrant. The 70mm format is reproduced faithfully in p resolution. It really is a joy to watch this stunning presentation of such a visually rich movie.

The audio is also the best it's ever been, well balanced and channeled properly so that voices are crisp and sound effects aren't overbearing. The music is clear without any distortions, making the subtler textures, muffled in previous editions, more noticeable.

The extras are the same as Fox's DVD, minus the stills gallery and foreign issue trailers. Treat yourself to a sterling example of the kind of high class entertainment Hollywood was capable of dishing out once upon a time - it'll make you forget the gossip and marvel in the artistry.

My highest recommendation. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. Coming in for a lot of criticism at the time, mainly because of the Burton Taylor off screen scandal, but it is a gorgeous film, a true epic in every sense, and made when the vast crowds, and incredible sets you see are actual people and rebuilt temples and palaces, not computer generated.

What I would love to see is the hours of missing footage Twentieth Century Fox made director Mankewicz remove from his original two movies idea of a three hour film Caesar and Cleopatra followed by a three hour one about Anthony and Cleopatra.

Fox thought the audience would only be interested in the scandalous couple and not want to see a movie that hardly featured Burton, in spite of a terrific performance from Rex Harrison as Caesar.

The footage has never been found, though people are still searching, and I hope one day they find it. But what there is in the four hour release is a compelling story of the siren of the nile and her attempts to become the empress of Rome, manipulating first one Roman then another, and failing both times.

Taylor is good, especially in the intimate moments, and she of course looks gorgeous throughout, while sparks fly between her and Burton.

Part of the missing footage appears to be at least one full scale battle as the film opens after the fighting and one can see as far as the horizon, thousands of extras moving about clearing up after the fight.

Now who hires an army and uses it for just clean up? Most of the epic is in the sets and set pieces, most notably Cleopatra's entrance into Rome, the night attack on the palace, and the fateful sea battle.

But all is wrapped up in such splendid costumes, accompanied by a wonderful score from Alex North, and a superb supporting cast, that the best thing to do is sit back and immerse yourself in this lost world from two thousand years ago, as recreated by a team of technicians at the top of their game.

The blu ray version brings out the beautiful photography of this film, produced at a time before computer animation and with huge crowds of extras and sets.

An improbably beautiful Taylor stars with the honey voiced Burton and a host of great character actors.

Dialogue now appears archaic and nearly Shakespearean at times, but this adds to its beauty and appeal.

Perhaps a little overlong but we can now see this this as an opportunity to enjoy even more of an epic - perhaps the epic or epics - filmed in an era without computer graphics.

This is a real treat to everyone who appreciates the golden age of Hollywood. Perhaps this film will generate such interest and admiration from a younger generation.

The film is a worthy tribute to the golden age of Hollywood. For me this film is a bit of a blast from the past.

I remember it from the 70s and early 80s when it was the topic of conversations for a week after every TV screening.

The DVD version I purchased 3 disc set presents it with a run time of just over four hours which apparently is longer than the original theatrical release but just right for another long lonely night in during the current lockdown situation.

The feature film comes on disc one and two, and in this case it's a good thing it's split. There is an entracte around the two hour mark and it's a welcome chance to get refreshments before you insert disc two.

Also, it's a natural break in the story. Part one tells the story of Cleopatra and Caesar, in part two it's the more complicated and vastly more interesting story of Antony and Cleopatra.

Elizabeth Taylor is dazzling as Cleopatra. For me this will forever be her most iconic role. I'm even prepared to forgive the incongruous high heels she wears.

Rex Harrison makes for a dignified if rather theatrical Caesar. But whereas in my younger days it was all about the glamourous leading lady, on this recent revisiting of the film it was Richard Burton's performance as Antony that impressed me most.

He really was a wonderful actor. Also nice to see Martin Landau in a very substantial supporting role as Rufio.

And if you look closely, and at the right time, you can even spot Desmond Llewelyn Bond's Q as a Roman senator. Visually the film is dazzling with grandiose sets, costumes and make up.

A real spectacle on an epic scale. The high point must surely be Cleopatra's entrance in Rome on that immense Sphinx throne pullled by Egyptian slaves.

It's mindboggling. And back in the 60s in the years before cgi this was all built and done for real. The film is presented in widescreen format.

Picture and sound quality are very nice, the colours are vibrant and subtitles are available for those who may need them. The bonus material on the third disc is plentiful and for me a welcome addition to a film I fondly remember from my youth.

There may be better and historically more accurate films about the iconic Egyptian queen, but for me this is still the most enjoyable version.

Loved seeing it again. Report abuse. Another epic sixties production, shows how far modern films have fallen recently in terms of the quality of film, sound, cinematography and general lighting and staging.

This is simply a majestic, sweeping tale of the excesses of the Cleopatra dynasty and it is clear why the Director was so obsessed with Liz Taylor as the lead character.

Her stunning looks and beauty shine out loud and clear in this outing, a film and Film company that at one stage was threatened with total disaster when it's production costs overran by many millions.

The finished product, however, was so worth the effort, everyone should have this Blu-ray DVD in their collection!

When Antony returns to the palace, Apollodorus , not believing that Antony is worthy of his queen, convinces him that she is dead, whereupon Antony falls on his own sword.

Apollodorus then confesses that he misled Antony and assists him to the tomb where Cleopatra and two servants have taken refuge. Antony dies in Cleopatra's arms.

Octavian and his army march into Alexandria with Caesarion's dead body in a wagon. He discovers the dead body of Apollodorus, who had poisoned himself.

Octavian receives word that Antony is dead and Cleopatra is holed up in a tomb. There he offers her his word that he will allow her to rule Egypt as a Roman province in return for her agreeing to accompany him to Rome.

Cleopatra knows her son is dead and agrees to Octavian's terms, including a pledge not to harm herself. After Octavian departs, she orders her servants in coded language to assist with her suicide.

Octavian realizes that she is going to kill herself and he and his guards burst into Cleopatra's chamber and find her dressed in gold, and dead, along with her servants, while an asp crawls along the floor.

The story of Cleopatra had proved a hit in for silent-screen legend Theda Bara. Paramount's production, using different source material and starring Claudette Colbert , was a huge success.

In , 20th Century Fox executives hired veteran Hollywood producer Walter Wanger to shepherd another film about Cleopatra into production.

Fox was reimbursed by the insurance company and Mamoulian was fired. Joseph L. During filming, Taylor met Burton and the two began an adulterous affair; the scandal made headlines worldwide, since both were married to others, and brought bad publicity to the already troubled production.

Mankiewicz was later fired during the editing phase, only to be rehired to reshoot the opening battle scenes in Spain. The cut of the film which Mankiewicz screened for the studio was six hours long.

This was cut to four hours for its initial premiere, but the studio demanded over the objections of Mankiewicz that the film be cut once more, this time to just barely over three hours to allow theaters to increase the number of showings per day.

These would have been released separately, as Caesar and Cleopatra followed by Antony and Cleopatra. In his book Marilyn: A Biography , Norman Mailer puts some of the blame for Monroe's suicide on the studio's halting production on her movie.

The music of Cleopatra was scored by Alex North. It was released several times, first as an original album, and later versions were extended.

A reviewer for Time said, "As drama and as cinema, Cleopatra is riddled with flaws. It lacks style both in image and in action. It should have been about three large people, but it lacked reality and passion.

I found it vulgar. Positive reactions came from such publications as Variety , which wrote, " Cleopatra is not only a supercolossal eye-filler the unprecedented budget shows in the physical opulence throughout , but it is also a remarkably literate cinematic recreation of an historic epoch.

Retrospective reviews have been more forgiving towards it. American film critic Emanuel Levy said, "Much maligned for various reasons, [ The film won four Academy Awards and was nominated for five more.

We will hold where we are. The sun comes up. The day the Blu-ray copy came available was the day I bought a Blu-ray player. Perhaps the best thing I can say about this film is my initial experience.

Went to a theater to see it in ' This is the longest movie in the world. It is 4 hours and 11 minutes long, but feels longer. I was wrong. This is the movie that killed the sword-and-sandal epic.

I had heard that Richard Burton and Liz Taylor met and fell in love while filming this movie, that their budding romance tanked filming because he encouraged her in her vice overeating while she encouraged him in his drinking.

You can actually see Elizabeth Taylor's weight gain in this movie. She starts off with a waistline that borders on the grotesque and is constantly showcased, but once Richard Burton enters the scene, her face gets puffier and her dresses are consistently covered with an extra layer to camouflage what I suppose Hollywood considered fat.

At no point is her weight actually excessive; it is just no longer ridiculously thin. As you will read below, in my opinion it is not the acting that destroyed this movie, but the writing.

If she was a good actress, she did not demonstrate that talent in this film. She only breathes life into the role with her dramatic death.

He is at all times atrocious. A better casting choice would have made the first half of the film less laborious.

Richard Burton is by far the best actor in this film, but even he takes some time to find his footing. It is not until he starts coming across as bewildered as Hamlet that he actually gets good.

He also sports a Roman tunic at all times comically short. Roddy McDowell portrays Octavian and is actually very good in the role, although he comes across as more Caligula than Augustus Caesar.

There was only so much that the actors could do with the material provided. Endless dull dialogue interspersed with massive scenes of battle or pomp.

It's hard to articulate exactly what is so dreadful about this movie, but if you choose to watch it, you will find yourself horrified at how much time is left - repeatedly.

In a massage scene, half of Liz Taylor's bum and one leg are covered, the rest not. And there are some dancing girls with pasties instead of tops that are straight out of Las Vegas.

Or not. EDIT: Notes from the course Burton's speeches were especially panned, but that's the fault of the writers, not the actor!

They had originally meant to make two 3-hour movies, but instead condensed it into one 3-hour movie. A separate 4-hour version survived, and that is this movie.

The longer version was lost. The combination of intense drama with eye-popping pageantry and spectacle has never again been seen in motion pictures, and never will.

No expense was spared, everything was built to size, and you see it all on the screen. This is due to the intelligent script and direction, both courtesy of Joseph L.

Mankiewicz, and to the excellent performances of everyone in the cast, from leading to supporting players. Elizabeth Taylor is pure perfection as the ambitious, seductive Queen of the Nile who uses her wiles to achieve her goals.

She's breathtakingly beautiful, oozing with sexuality, and brainy to boot. As Marc Antony, Richard Burton delivers a super-charged performance that's in total harmony with the character's complexities and grandeur of the film.

He also includes plenty of his characteristic sarcasm and self-loathing, without which a Burton performance would be incomplete.

The fact that he and Taylor fell in love during production worked to good advantage toward fueling the on-screen drama.

In his superb portrayal of Julius Caesar, Rex Harrison brought a distinguished, world-weariness and vulnerability to the role that's so potent, his presence is felt even in the second half in which he doesn't appear.

A standout is Roddy McDowall as Octavian - he's really a lot of fun to watch and almost steals every scene he's in. The screenplay was based on several sources and takes some historical license, but most of it is factual and the political situation that existed between Rome and Egypt at the time is accurately and intricately played out.

Noteworthy too is that with a running time of four hours and eleven minutes, the narrative is remarkably tight. There aren't any redundant scenes or silly diversions thrown in just to eat up footage; all the action has a definite purpose, which is to serve the story.

THIS is how a long movie should be made.

This record was beaten in in the film Star! Schawn Belston, serving as senior vice president of library and technical services for 20th Century Fox , was put in charge of creating a restored version of the film for the company.

After a two-year process in he was able to restore a four-hour, eight-minute version. One of Belston's finds for this version was the original camera negative which was shot on 65mm.

Any longer version, which has yet to be found, would have existed only to show then—studio boss Darryl F. Fading and damage to the negative were corrected digitally with an eye on preserving detail and authenticity while avoiding digital manipulation.

They removed the clicks and hisses, then with the aid of the trained ears of musicians reconfigured the track for 5. On May 21, , the restored film was shown at a special screening at the Cannes Film Festival , to commemorate its 50th anniversary.

Unfortunately Fox had long ago destroyed all of the trims and outs from negatives to save costs, preventing the release of traditional outtakes.

The home media packages did include commentary tracks and two short films: The Cleopatra Papers and a film about the elaborate sets, The Fourth Star of Cleopatra.
